How To Become Better With AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO TREATING ANEMIA

Ayurveda is the Vedic science of life. It naturally competes with the most advanced medical science to provide some effective Ayurvedic home remedies for various types of disabilities. Most medicines usually use a mixture of spices and herbs. Ayurveda is making the world a happier and healthier place with a variety of health remedies and simple ways to relieve stress and body pain.

Ayurvedic approach to treating anemia:

• Anemia is a condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells (RBCs) or hemoglobin (Hb) in the blood. A normal Hb level in an adult woman is 12-14 g/dl and in an adult man 14-18 g/dl. When a person's Hb level is below the normal level, he is called anemic.

Anemia is called Pandurog in Ayurveda. This is due to lack of blood in the body, lack of proper diet and malnutrition. All these factors can produce toxins in the stomach like "ama" which block the channel called "rasa dhatu" (primary water of the body) and cause other symptoms of anemia.

There are three types of anemia:

1. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA): The most common form of anemia. This may be due to inadequate dietary iron intake or the body being unable to absorb the required amount of iron. IDA is most commonly seen in children and pregnant women.

2. Megaloblastic Anemia: Caused by deficiency of vitamin B12 or folic acid in the body.

3. Hemolytic Anemia: Caused by lack of blood in the body.

Based on the weakness of the dosha in the body, anemia is classified in Ayurveda as:

1. Vataja Type: Characterized by pale skin, constipation, black stools, shortness of breath, cracked joints and rough and dry skin.

2. Pitta Type: Characterized by yellow eyes, dark colored urine, dark brown or yellow stools and dizziness.

3. Kaphaj type: Characterized by inflammation and cold and clammy skin.

*Combination of three doshas is called Sannipatja (excessive in children due to intake of mud or dirt).

Treatment of anemia according to Ayurveda:

1. Abhavanga (massage that helps flush out toxins).

2. Exercise.

3. Diet: Increase your intake of iron rich foods like beets, carrots, green leafy vegetables, apples, pomegranates etc. Citrus fruits like oranges help with iron absorption. Shatabari ghee or bitter ghee helps in curing anemia.

4. Herbs: Vitamin C found in triphala helps the body absorb iron.
